In 2000, nearly two hundreds world leaders assembled under the United Nations (UN) supervision and adopted an instrument called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Among other things, the MDGs was aimed at making wakeup calls and demanding governments meet their obligations in order to improve the living standards of their respective citizens. One of its goals (MDGs 5) mainly focuses on women and children as well as their related issues. The targeted year for the achievement of the MDGs is 2015.

United States President Barack Obama will on Thursday, May 27, welcome President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia to the White House. The Executive Mansion, quoting a White House press statement, says the United States greatly values its historic bonds with Liberia.  Liberia, the White House says, is an important democratic partner of the United States that has made tremendous strides in consolidating stability, improving governance, and contributing to regional peace and development in recent years.

LABOR MINISTER COMMENDS SIME DARBY

Liberia's Labor Minister, Cllr. Tiawon Gongloe has commended the Malaysian-based Company, Sime Darby, now owner of the former Guthrie Rubber Plantation in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties for the progress it has made so far in less than six months after taking over the plantation. Speaking over the weekend at the induction ceremony of the leadership of Sime Darby workers union, Minister Gongloe expressed gratitude to the Liberian Government, United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), and other stakeholders for restoring total peace and stability on the once disputed Guthrie Plantation. The induction ceremony was held under the auspices of the General and Agriculture Allied Workers Union of Liberia (GAAWUL).
