Last week an Italian security expert was providing workshop to Liberian Security Officials on tactics and techniques that would help them perform a little more efficiently.

The workshop brought together some of the best Liberia has to offer. An array of security elites from the various sectors was represented.

A workshop such as this is very essential in building capacity and helping to raise standards to international levels.

 The extreme details of what the workshop was about are not known, but coming at this juncture in Liberia's rebuilding process is a heartedly welcoming development.

The Italians have had several years of battling criminals in their midst, especially professional criminals such as the mafia and other gangsters from Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, South America and other parts of the world.

Additionally, they are renowned in providing VIP protective services to politicians, celebrities, religious authorities, sports stars and even criminals.

With their wealth of experience, our security officials stand to gain some wisdom.

But first, the Liberian security apparatus must be willing to transfer the knowledge into useful by-product adaptable to our own situations in battling criminals.

Like using modern and world tested techniques in nabbing criminals in the political arena,

Such as corrupt government officials who are bent on enriching themselves rather than the nation, at the expense of the common people;

We hope that the lessons and the techniques learnt will help our police and other law enforcement agencies become effective and robust in combating the growing waves of cutlass and gun totting arm robbers roaming many neighborhoods at night.

We also hope that the lessons learnt will be useful in controlling the influx of drugs into the country and endow our officers with the knowledge that would enable them deal with domestic drug dealers and users.

Our fear is that this may be yet another workshop or training where serious and brilliant ideas are discussed and several hundreds or thousands of dollars later, the ideas die on the implementing table.

We are worry that everyday Liberians may not benefit at all if this were just another expensive get-to-gether for free meals and per diems.

Our fear comes from years of seeing our leaders start something everyone applauds and in no time it falters from lack of care of follow up.

So, this time, we beg, Liberians are crying for security help, please use the knowledge for betterment and improving our lots.

Finally, let's not accept fancy vehicles this time, please tell the Italians and other donors to teach us community policing, the concept of crime watch, spotting drug trafficking activities, and putting a lid on corruption.

These are much more beneficial and would serve the greater good than accepting cars and other fancy donations that we can not maintain, because we need security.
