Unimpeachable reports reveal that several Unity Party supporters, sympathizers, financiers, coalition partners and other high ranking officials in both public and private circles alongside people from other parties and independents have been meeting secretly at various sites in Greater Monrovia, to discuss President Sirleaf's decision to contest the 2011 elections.
According to a very reliable source who attended the meeting, many of those in attendance were furious with the President for breaking her political promise to them and the nation that she would not have sought a second term. Some of those in attendance, according to the source were some of the best brains and financial thrusts behind the President's 2005 victory, in terms of strategies and money.
It can be recalled that in her state of the Nation address delivered on Monday, January 25, 2010, the President infuriated many Liberians when she boldly declared "I know from whence we came yesterday. I know where we are today; I know where we ought to be tomorrow and I know how we will get there… and so it is for these reasons and to bring to an end all speculations, that I now announce to you and to the thousands of supporters in radio land and abroad that I will be a candidate, a formidable candidate, in the 2011 elections."
With this line, the President started a firestorm that will be razing until the polls close in 2011. It also provoked some of her opponents and supporters into gear for the formation of a new political party that will encompass some of the best names in the business of politics in Liberia.
Although many of the names have been revealed in other media outlets, due to the politically charged nature of this information and considering that some of the players are government officials and confidantes of the President, In Profile Daily is awaiting confirmation from some of the players we have contacted before publishing their names.
While our investigation into this political development continues, a reliable Executive Mansion source has informed this paper that there's growing dissent in the Unity Party over the manner in which the President's declaration of intent was made. Accordingly, it is said that some would have preferred a neutral ground for the President to emphasize progress and development rather than the Capitol Building. Some partisans are said to be pointing fingers at a handful of advisors and family members of the President for this "bad timing" that has stirred up so much debate.
