A crossed section of Liberian citizens have expressed satisfaction over the deployment of officers of the Liberian National Police on various highways in the country. Citizens from several parts of the city said police authority needs to do this throughout the Country to ensure the safety of citizens and foreign residents alike.
Recently, authority of the Liberian National Police employed a strategy by deploying several police officers on various highways in the Country to avoid criminal activities on these highways as may have been. Speaking to a team of In Profile Reporters recently in Monrovia and parts adjacent, some citizens expressed happiness in this action taken by police authority and at the same time expressed thanks and appreciation to the LNP for this brilliant mood. They called on officers assigned on the various highways to respect the drivers and the people as they execute their duties so that their prestige can remain as high as it is now.
“Notwithstanding, we the citizens need to equally respect the police in the discharge of their duties,” one prominent citizen said. On the other hand, there are a few of those who spoke to our reporters said that the placing of police officers on the highways is a waste of time as they will certainly harass the drivers and other citizens while on the highways. They claimed that the police presence on the various highways will bring hardship to the many travelers who travel to various parts of the Country, especially those people that go to do their business. “They will almost make things impossible and frustrating for the people who do business between Monrovia and other parts of Liberia,” one of the opposing citizens to the police highway patrol indicated. However, there were some other citizens who also chatted with our reporters told them that the highway patrol is a helpful idea and that we as citizens need to understand and give all the necessary support to the LNP so that they can do a good job that we all will be happy as we go about now and in the future. They at the same time claimed that some Liberians are not used to adhering to rules and regulations, always wanting to by-pass the system. “Anybody you hear complaining when good things are put into place, that person hates system and never likes to abide by rules,” another of who was spoken to intimated. Others, who also talked to our team of reporters, said that the police highway patrol team has already begun harassing and intimidating peaceful citizens on various highways by extorting money from. As the views are mixed, the Government of Liberia is determined to strength the highway patrols throughout the Country to ensure the peace and security of its citizens. Recently, Inspector General of the Liberian National Police, Beatrice Munah Sieh-Brown on a local radio in Monrovia called on citizens to work with the LNP by reporting crimes in the community to the police that which will help curtail or minimize the prevailing rate of crimes in Liberia. The IG also indicated that citizens should not hesitate to report to the LNP authority any misconduct by any police officer. |
