The Acting Monrovia City Mayor Mary Broh accompanied by about nine able body men stormed the offices of the In profile Daily on Capitol Bye-pass late noon yesterday in Monrovia.
In addition to being heavily accompanied by these body guards, one could measure the twig of power beaming on her face, something which certainly brought to one’s mind the ugly experiences during the dark period in Liberia including the fifteen years of devastating civil war when even the ants crowned themselves kings and queens of destruction.
The sourness in her mind and heart and perhaps the body guards could be clearly measured. From all indications she meant something else (taking the law in her own hands as was the case during the fifteen years of fighting in the country). But Thank God it’s day and not night. It is day because the physical guns that were used by the rebels to ruin the country and destroy decent people have passed away. It is day because Liberia now exists in the eyes of the international community which seek to ensure that the rules of law, freedom of speech and of the press are sustained.
It’s day because the power of the pen is made to stand over and above corrupt gavels from bottom to the top. Indeed, the time has gone when people abused power only because of being favored by the president.
The visit of the Acting Monrovia City Mayor could not have been friendly given the associated mood that resembled those of war commanders. War commanders often wear lion’s face to ferment fear, harass people and even kill. They usually live far away from the perimeter of law and order considering themselves as the alpha and omega of the day. War commanders are brutal by nature and therefore respect no man. We saw war commanders during the fifteen years of war. They looted, killed, vandalized, broke down law and order. We saw them raping women in the bushes and suppressing the dawn of the daylight. Certainly Madam Broh has gone to the In profile Daily apparently to react to the banner headline story: City Hall Turned ‘4 for 5’ Center-as Broh Opens Illegal Business’ Which appeared in its Thursday June 14, 2012 edition.
The paper had done its investigation and found out that the city mayor has established a business center at the city hall vicinity using state funds for selfish gains. She may have gone there to provide some justification or denial. But the form, manner and mood that were associated with her visit could be equated to those of war commanders. But thank God it’s daylight and the presence of evils are being narrowed. However, there are still the persistence of what could be called ‘white evils’ in the society as opposed to the ‘red evils’ that were practiced by the war commanders. The ‘white evils’ are selfishness, greed for wealth against the economic interest of the state, etc.
The ‘white evils’ are the mindset to keep others as perpetual hosts of poverty while a few persons cleverly squander state funds. The ‘white evils’ could be equated to the established culture of nepotism and favoritism that has engrossed the entire society. The ‘white evils’ are the lack of the sense of patriotism and nationalism on the part of most people who serve in government.
In Liberia today there is a culture of accommodating friends and relatives and assigning to them fabulous salaries and benefits.
I hope God will continue to keep us under the daylight so that the evil intent of those who wish to harm the media could be aborted. |
