The Cocopa Rubber Plantation in Nimba County was a scene of total shock and amazement Friday when a 47-year-old man and his three children died as a result of a lightning strike.

According to our correspondent in the region, the late Peter Duapa who was an overseer on the Plantation and his three kids met their demise while asleep in Camp #2 at around 11 PM on Friday, June 15 during a heavy down pour of rain.. Our correspondent says the victims were immediately rushed to the Ganta Methodist Hospital after the incident, but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

A survivor and occupant of the same house who spoke to In Profile Daily said while in bed that night, he heard a very loud sound after which according to him he could smell a strange odor like gun powder.

Mr. Easton Dolo told our correspondent when rushed from his room to the hallway he heard the wife of Mr. Duapa calling for help.

Mr. Dolo further averred that it was at this point he immediately forced the door of Mr. Duapa's family open and to his surprise, he saw the late Peter lying unconscious. His three children, Melvina, 16, T-Girl, 12 and Wuah, 11, were all in the same condition, but in separate rooms
.
There are several rumors being speculated about the death of the entire family. Some are saying that Mr. Duapa might have gone to perform in the ''Under World'' when he was hit. There is another version that on the night of June 9, Mr. Duapa was visited by a headman who worked directly under him whose name was not mentioned complaining about certain deduction from his pay on that day. According to this version, in the process of his complaint, he reportedly mistakenly dropped his pay envelope containing unspecified sum of United States dollars at Peter's residence.

This paper was also hinted that the next day this individual in question inquired from the late Peter Duapa whether he ever came across this money and Peter accordingly replied “no”. Others are linking the deaths to theft, suspecting that this man may have consulted a ‘jujuman’ who fired the lightning based on African belief.

The various versions are very difficult to be verified as no one is easily willing to speak to journalists apparently for fear.

It can be recalled that in 2011, a market woman died when he was hit by lightning in the Ganta General Market. Similar incident occurred in the Guinea Road Community in Ganta in 2010 when a ten-year-old boy was killed by lightning.
