Deputy Police Director for Training Samuel Dakana has urged recent graduates of the National Police Training Academy to exhibit a high level of professionalism in the discharge of their statutory mandate.
Director Dakana told the graduates to be cognizant of their role in society to protect lives and properties, and must not do anything that could bring the LNP into public ridicule. The commandant of the National Training Academy said it was important that the graduates uphold the rule of law and the basic human rights of all persons regardless of status, creed and geographical background.
He made the statements last week Saturday at the graduation ceremony of 108 recruits of the Police Support Unit (PSU) class 6 at the National Police Training Academy in Paynesville, outside Monrovia. According to the Deputy Director, the officers were trained in basic crowd control and civil disturbance, patrol techniques, first aid, land navigation and human rights.
Commissioner Dakana asserted that the country was in a period of transition, and as such it needs men and women with integrity to serve in the security sector.
He stressed the need for the graduates to demonstrate skills and acts that are internationally acceptable in the discharge of their functions.
In remarks, the Country Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Liberia, Demonic Sam indicated that the graduation of another batch of officers is a monumental step to building an effective and vibrant police force.
Mr. Sam noted that the continued provision of what he calls best training environment and technical knowledge for the training exercises, clearly manifests the government’s commitment to improving the justice system of the country,
The UNDP-Liberia head reminded the graduates that serving as officers requires responsibility, commitment and the test of character, as such, they are under obligation to show respect for those they will be serving.
He emphasized that in all aspects of their duties, the officers should set standard which is very integral to democratic principles.
