The Executive Director of the Concern Youth in Solidarity for the Promotion of Good Governance(CYSPGG), Baccus Carr, is calling on members of the house of legislature to put into place proper legislation structure or policy that will clearly define what’s going to happen to monies generated from the exploitation of oil; companies involved and how is it benefits ordinary Liberians so that the natural resources will not be a curse but rather a blessing.

The CYSPGG executive spoke Tuesday at the Dr. Martin Luther King intellectual discourse series in Monrovia organized by his group to address issues of national concern and human rights related issues in Liberia.

Mr. Carr reiterated that as Liberia is endowed with vast quantities of natural resources which are held by and in the name of the government for the benefit of the Liberians. But regrettably, the exploitation of its forest and mineral resources for many decades has not had adequate or meaningful valuable impact on the national economy or the livelihood of Liberians.

Mr. Carr maintained the exploitation of the natural resources of the country has led to the deprivation and conflicts due largely to the lack of transparency and accountability in the operations and regulation of logging, mining, agriculture and related companies and the persistence of opportunism in the award and performance of concessions or licenses.

Amidst the recent discovery of oil by the African petroleum in Liberia and President Sirleaf appointment of her son Robert Sirleaf as Board chair and her cousin Randolph McClain as president respectively, the concern youth in solidarity for the promotion of good governance (CYSPGG) wants strong legislation to protect Liberia’s oil.

The Concern Youth in Solidarity for the Promotion Good Governance (CYSPGG) is therefore calling on members of the national legislature to institute healthy and proper legislation to safe guard the country’s emerging oil and gas sector. As the potential for oil production in our country is in sight, the necessary laws to protect the sector and benefit the entire country is highly significant at this early stage.

Mr. Carr is however urging policy makers and all relevant stakeholders in the oil sector and the national government to make available a clear regulatory structure that will provide the much needed resources for the nation and its people as oil remains a resources of the country, and so early regulation in the sector must be enforced to generate money so that Liberians and companies involved can benefit from the economic boom. The civil society youth group name some countries that put in to place good policy and regulations that are benefiting from their resources as: Ghana, Nigeria, Indonesia, Iraq and many other countries in the world who are happy to share their experience he noted.
