A prodemocracy group calling itself Bassa Crusader for Democratic Action (BARCURDA) has frowned on what it termed ill-treatment allegedly meted out against university students hailing from Grand Bassa County by officials of the county, especially the legislative Caucus.
The group said it is disappointed in that prominent citizens, legislative caucus and all of the county government officials deliberately refused to attend the county’s University Student Union Scholarship program intended to raise money for over two thousand Bassa students enrolling at various universities in the country.
Bassa Crusader for Democratic Action is a prodemocracy organization with the objective of working to promote the socio-political and democratic space among the Bassa people and the Liberian society at large.
Speaking to the In Profile Daily Tuesday in Monrovia, the organization’s National Chairman, Samuel Goweh said it was unfortunate to note that the program which would have meant well for the students, raise only L$ 1,245 and US$70 due to the absence of the county officials from the occasion.
Chairman Goweh stressed that the development of any society squarely rests on the development of its human resource, noting that the failure of Bassa legislators and officials to identify with the students suggests that they are not interested in developing the human resource of the county.
He said it was disgusting to note that other counties within the country hold their university students in high esteem as potential partners for growth and development, claiming that regrettably, the Grand Bassa County Legislative Caucus and other officials see the students as potential treats and by sponsoring them could mean a shot in the legs.
The BARCRUDA boss asserted that despite the limited resources River Cess County has, it has donated US$45,000 towards the scholarship program of students hailing from the county.
He indicated that it was unbelievable that Grand Bassa County that receives millions of United States dollars as social development funds from multi-million concession companies operating there, has contributed only US$ 25,000 so far to the students, adding that the money was given during the heat of the 2011 elections apparently to boost the campaign of the Unity Party.
Meanwhile, the Bassa Crusader for Democratic Action has called on the Legislative Caucus and all official of government hailing from the county to redirect their resources to human resource capacity development for the good of the county and the country at large.
