The Ministry of Public Works has placed an immediate halt on the issuance of construction permit to the public for the period of two weeks. The purpose of the moratorium according to Public Works Minister Samuel Kofi Woods is to streamline the process and review current construction activities in the country.
The Ministry named countless numbers of violations by people who are building in areas that undermine already built infrastructure thereby creating early damage on rehabilitated road and renovated buildings.
“In spite of the huge work done on the streets of Monrovia and other areas, we are now noticing how early people are undermining the work. In Monrovia, people are seen wasting garbage using drainages or dump sites on newly constructed road. Heavy equipment are also destroying our newly constructed pavement”, Minister Woods outlined.
Commenting on the over-flooding of water in some areas in Monrovia, MPW therefore indicates that an emergency task force has been organized to assist residents of affected communities. In the mean time the Ministry is creating awareness about the cutting of vegetation growth and calling on community dwellers to desist from dumping or wasting dirt in the water channels, which is to some extent impeding the free flow of water.
Commenting on the GSA area, MPW States that its readiness to work with communities to clear water channels and refutes the belief that the over-flooding of water is due to inadequate drainage construction. “Notably, the lower part of GSA road is directly in the swamp and over six days rain will certainly create some alarm. More besides, the two most important things that are required in that area is reduction in the vegetation growth and placing a halt to dumping garbage into water channels or drainages as well as the construction of homes in low land areas”.
In a related development, the MPW states that it remains committed to the provision of quality infrastructure and reminds the public to continue to use the two Cellcom phone numbers to contact the emergency task force. The numbers are: 077-974-334 and 077-333-335. |
