The Deputy Secretary General of the ruling Unity Party (UP), Miller Catakaw, has termed as welcoming, move by the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) to bring together political parties and civil society groups to a round-table to discuss issues of national concerns rather than taking its grievances to the streets.

“The avoidance of a violent posture to dialogue by the CDC indicates that the party is no longer an opposition but a non-governing party,” Catakaw declared.

The UP stalwart made the statement at CDC’s consultative forum with political parties over the weekend, aimed at forging a way forward to review the electoral laws and how amendments can be made.

Catakaw said his party believes that society transgresses or improves in accordance with its laws and regulations, noting that the establishment of the Law Reform Commission by the Unity Party-led government is a clear indication and manifestation.

Catakaw, however, said to review and reform law, “we have to be well informed of what we want to change and what the changes will bring and benefit our people and society, and not just copying from others on the basis of face value representation or analysis.”

Catakaw also used the occasion commend authorities of CDC for the initiative to call on all political parties for a consultative meeting in regards to constitutional and electoral law reform.

“This the Unity Party notes with compliments that CDC is not the party that used to present her case in the street but a party that is now presenting her case on the table for discussion.  If this is the new CDC, then CDC is no longer an opposition party but a non- governing party because it is now considering the interest of the country first as the Unity Party does,” Catakaw added.

He concluded that the Unity Party believes that in order to succeed in the reformation of the country’s laws, political leaders must respect and summit to the laws and regulations govern various institutions for the greater interest other than self-interest.
