President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has issued Executive Order No. 42, waiving all taxes and tariffs on key anti-malaria commodities and products determined jointly by the Ministries of Health & Social Welfare and Finance.
According to an Executive Mansion release, African Heads of State and Government working to end malaria-related deaths established the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) to keep malaria high on the political and policy agenda at global, national and local levels; to provide a forum for high-level, collective advocacy to ensure an efficient global procurement system with an emphasis on funding, manufacturing, and distribution of anti-malaria products; and to provide a forum to share best practices, review progress and address challenges in meeting malaria targets.
As a member and current Chair of ALMA, the Government of Liberia is committed to achieving the United Nations’ goal of universal access to malaria control interventions to end preventable malaria deaths by 2015.
Liberia seeks to demonstrate its performance equal to that of other African countries as the 19th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union convenes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday, July 15.
Although malaria is preventable, insufficient resources, coupled with a climate that is very hospitable to the deadliest strain of the ailment and the most efficient vector, has made the disease a leading cause of sickness and death among African children.
