Student riot continued Thursday at the University of Liberia when students of the two campus-based political parties that clashed on Wednesday due to political differences resumed violence by engaging into rock war.
Yesterday’s incidence disrupted classes and normal activities on the university campus while several students reportedly sustained wounds and journalists cameras destroyed.
Two of the three political parties at the UL, Student Democratic Alliance (STUDA) and Student Integrated Movement (SIM) formed a coalition to take on the Student Unification Party (SUP) believed to have served for 43 years on the campus. Members of SUP were reportedly chased out of the campus thus leaving the opposition coalition (SIM and STUDA) roaming the university campus for hours.
At the same, one of the UL Police officer claimed to have been beaten by SIM and STUDA members on grounds that he was a SUPist. The officer reportedly took cutlass in self- defense and was later apprehended by members of the Emergency Response Unit (ERU).
Meanwhile, SUP has issued a release accusing Mr. Robert Sirleaf, a son of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, of infusingUS$10,000 into the politics in support of SIM and STUDA vision in order to combat SUP.
SUP members have called on the government to carry on a comprehensive audit on tuitions and fees given by government and other donors that are allegedly being squandered by the Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Weade Elliot-Brownell in the amount of US$1.5 million. |
