The Liberian Government has announced about US$300, 000 dollars as budget for the 165th Independence celebrations to be hosted by Montserrado County.
The disclosure was made by Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs Robert Kpardeh, during MICAT regular press briefing Thursday.
According to him, the budget which is being described as the smallest since the rotation of Independence celebrations have been held over the last six years, was setup in the amount due to the fact that Montserrado County has needed facilities compared to counties that previously hosted the country’s Natal celebrations and benefitted huge projects.
Minister Kpardeh named projects to be dedicated by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the celebrations as a newly constructed children play ground in Carbrah Estate, a library in New Kru Town, the Superintendent quarter and Presidential Residence in Bentol , among others.
He clarified that shifting the celebrations from Bomi to Montserrado County was in no way a political decision as is being widely insinuated, but rather it was based on advice from engineers who warned that with the developmental challenges facing Bomi, no amount of money would have prepared the county for activities marking the festive event.
Giving an overview of the calendar of events for the celebrations, the Deputy Information Minister disclosed that the activities will kick-off today with the presentation of the Golden Image Award to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her distinction in the body politics of Liberia and her leadership so far.
On July 24th, there will be a major youth forum under the auspices of the International Youth Fellowship, bringing together young people drawn from across the country, while on July 25th, several Liberians will be honored at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their hard work which has led to the success of the nation over the years.
The event will climax with the official 165th Independence Day celebration on July 26, which is expected to be graced by Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bah Koromah and several other international guests. |
