The Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding, (CEMESP) has announced the recommencement of the good governance and political accountability training in River Gee and Grand Gedeh Counties with funding from the USAID.
A release issued and signed by CEMESP’s Executive Director Malcolm Joseph said the project falls under the third objective of IREX Civil Society and Media Leadership program that was piloted last year.
Three categories of stakeholders are targeted under this project including local authorities, community radio journalists and civil society organizations.
According to the release, the project seeks to build synergy among the three actors to work towards improving development outcomes in the context of demand and supply side of political accountability.
The five day training will be based on a Good Governance manual developed by CEMESP and was validated by other IREX partners. The manual contains modules on human rights, corruption, dependency, community radios, budget, advocacy, leadership, local government, lawmaking, among others.
The release also indicated that during the training, CEMESP’s trainers will employ role play, icebreakers and field work to make it more interactive.
One aspect of the training package that has been lauded insofar as it assures sustainability of the training is the inclusion of a radio magazine program ‘County Development Watch’ that will be used as a conduit for applying the issues learnt.
Community radios targeted are required to adapt the County Development Watch radio magazine template as part of the routine weekly program to be broadcast with a view of having multiplier effect on the wider community.
“It is the expectation that after the training CSOs and Community Radio Journalists of Grand Gedeh and River Gee will form budget monitoring network on the model of what were formed in the pilot phase in Bong, and Grand Bassa counties”, the release added.
The release further quotes Mr. Joseph as saying: “We want the community radio journalists and CSOs to have something to stay with in terms of engaging local authorities and other duty bearers to open up on such allocations as county and social development funds”.
IREX has indicated that the successful implementation of this project will lead to its replication in other counties, it concluded.
