Residents of Robertsville in White Plain Township, Montserrado County, have accused the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) of refusing on numerous occasions to provide them safe drinking water.
The residents said the LWSC authorities told them that it would be too costly to run pipes in the area despite the hydro being located in the township.
Speaking to the In Profile Daily Wednesday in White Plain, the Youth Chairman of the township, Allison Smallwood, said since last year, the township wrote a communication to the LWSC Managing Director for the provision of safe drinking water to the residents but that is yet to happen.
Smallwood narrated that the Managing Director sent a team to assess the area, but almost over a year since that engagement, there has been nothing said or done about their plight thereby causing residents to drink from unsafe wells and streams.
He alleged that the situation has led to the outbreak of Cholera, Diarrhea and other water borne diseases, thus causing deaths and sicknesses among the people in the township.
The White lain Township Youth Chairman has therefore called on the government to intervene and bring the alleged situation to an end by prevailing on the LWSC authorities to construct pumps in the township as according to him, Diarrhea and other killer diseases are taking lives away in the township.
Smallwood also claimed that this year alone, the death rate has risen to at least six with women and children being the victims.
The youth Chairman said they are willing to underwrite whatever cost it entails to construct pumps in the township so as to curb the continuous deaths of citizens claiming, “The LWSC has refused to provide basic social services to the people of at White Plain”.
When contacted via mobile phone, LWSC Communication Director, Wilmot Dweh, said LWSC is aware of the communication the citizens of the township sent during the administration of Hu Bun Tulay. However he promised that the current LWSC administration is taking consideration of the township concerns and will be meeting with them shortly to address the matter. |
