The senior associate magistrate in Zorzor District, Lofa County, Kesselly T. Kamara, has disclosed that criminal activities were on the rise in the district.
According to Magistrate Kamara, the lack of detention or correction centers within the district is said to be the major factor for such increment in criminal rate in the area.
The Magistrate quoted a police commander of the district as saying they (police) are keeping suspects in detention cell.
He added that suspected can only spend 48 hours in the hands of the police and are set free due to the lack of correction centers.
Magistrate Kamara spoke in an interview with our reporter who recently visited the county. Magistrate Kamara said major cases of the court are most often transferred to Voinjama by the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) but bad road condition in the county as prevents some transfers of suspects, with UNMIL informing the court to keep all of its suspects in Zorzor.
Since his appointment as magistrate in 2007, Kamara revealed 200 cases habe been resolved and some taken home for family discussions.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kamara is appealing to the Government of Liberia and the county Legislative Caucus to address the situation in order to provide safe and peaceful environment for citizens.
