The National Coordinator of the youth and disabled water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) Network, Timothy Kpeh, says there is need for WASH to be accessible all including youth and disabled communities. Kpeh stressed the need the young people and the disabled participate in designing, planning and construction of wells and pit latrines.

Speaking Wednesday at the official launch of the Youth and Disabled WASH network, held at the YMCA building in Monrovia, Kpeh observed that many Liberians lack access to sanitation and safe drinking water, because implementers mainly lack the capacity to provide adequate access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene to citizens across the country.

Kpeh then spoke of the importance for the youth and disabled to be fully involved in the implementation of the WASH compact, including women, children who are direct victims of water, sanitation and hygiene problems in various communities in Monrovia and leeward counties. He noted that they can be involved by prevailing on government through advocacy, to create and provide access to those basic services enshrined in the WASH compact.

The local youth advocacy group is calling on government to consider design for community of public pit latrines up to international standards so as to befit mainly the disabled people throughout the country

The Youth and disable organization said if these concern are not fully addressed by government and it implementing partners, they will march from street to street, house to house until their concerns are fully addressed, because millions of women, children and disable died from water borne diseases and other hygienic problems because of the lack of access to proper water, sanitation and hygiene,

Kpeh also called on the national legislature to create an Act establishing the Water and Sanitation Commission.

According to him, his organization intends to create awareness throughout Liberia on water, sanitation and hygiene and the WASH sector so as to pressurize government and implementing partners fully carry out the mandate of the WASH compact.
