Hundreds of children of the Slipway Community in Monrovia over the weekend were given gifts of charity for the Flag Day Holiday, along with a memorable dance show.
Children stood in separate lines as they were handed stuffed animals, teddy bears, doll babies and flags as a symbol of donation from the Jaffa Unit Dance group, in collaboration with the Greater Monrovia Omega Leo Club (GMOLC).
According to the manager of the Jaffa Unit, David Dean who is also a member of GMOLC) the main priority is to give these children something that they can remember for years to come, and also for them to feel good on this Flag Day holiday.
The laughter and delight of the children could be heard as children pushed and shoved one another to get a closer view of their “heaven sent” contributors, who had made their day a joyous one. “I’m happy that I have a play toy now, because I don’t have any at home,” stated eight year old Suliman.
After the toys were handed to each child, they were then presented the Liberian Flag to remind them the importance of their Flag. “Liberia is our home, and we are its people, and these are our children,” Jerry, the caretaker of the Slipway Community School, said.
Each child was asked to raise his\her own flag up as the Liberian pledge was recited aloud: “I pledge an allegiance to the flag of Liberia and to the republic of which it stands…”
With their gifts firmly enthralled in their little arms, the children were called into a circle to watch as one of Liberia’s best nominated dance groups did what they are known best to do, and that’s dance-these boys can really dance oh” yelled several children as they watched in admiration.
The Jaffa Unit was established in 2003, and has since risen to higher level with not only its unique and captivating dance moves, but also with its ability to focus on the youth and youth development.
