Despite the Operation ’Safe Heaven’ launched recently under which the Liberia National Police (LNP) has restricted the movement of motorcyclists from 6 am to 10 pm, it appears that armed robbers are determined to continue to terrorize residents of Monrovia and its environs.
On Wednesday, January 2nd, two armed robbers attacked a money changer identified as Joseph T. Tweh in the ‘Day Break Mouth Open’ Community on Bardnersville Road, outside Monrovia.
Explaining his ordeal to the In Profile Daily, money changer Tweh said the two robbers and the rider of a motorbike stopped near his business area at about 8:50 pm while the Chelsea and QPR March was in progress at a video club not far from where he transacts.
Mr. Tweh narrated that to his surprise, the two robbers walked to him and asked if he was changing money and he replied in the affirmative, then one of them requested him to give them the money he had in his possession.
“I asked him why must I give my money to you? He said he wanted to change, and told him give me the amount you want to change. After a heated argument, one of the robbers pulled out a short butt single barrel gun and pointed it to my neck, and I in a strong tone told him to take the dam thing from my neck”, Tweh narrated further.
He indicated that after the robber took the gun from his neck, he fired in the air under his (Tweh) umbrella and the robbers ran to the motorbike, and the rider picked up with heavy speed before people arrived on the scene.
According to him, the armed robbers were dressed in sweaters and wearing hats that covered their faces and heads.
The money changer said because of the strong resistance he put on, the robbers did not take a penny from him.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tweh has urged the LNP to beef up its night patrol if they are to succeed in creating safe heaven for residents of Monrovia and its environs.
At the same time, he has called on the police to ensure that the 10 pm restriction imposed on the movement of motorbikes remains enforced regardless of calls from some quarters to extend it to 12 am.
“What I saw on Wednesday night suggests to me that had it not been because of the restriction, these heartless guys would have made the festive season bitter for us”, Tweh noted.
