The Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS) has announced that fire outbreak cases have increased since the turn of the New Year describing the situation as alarming.

Assistant LNFS Director for Operations BoiBeljuBoi told the In Profile Daily that his entity has recorded eleven cases of fire outbreaks since January, this year.

Director Boi said the month of January has seen a high rise of fire cases than any other month, and named cars, electricity and houses, among others as the sources of the fire incidents.

According to him, from August-September of 2012, fire outbreaks had reduced in Monrovia and its environs due to the tireless efforts of the LNFS. ” The sanitization or awareness that the LNFS created last year about the danger and hazard of fire helped tremendously in tackling the situation,” he said.

The LNFS Deputy Director for Operations believes that fire outbreaks will be many by the end of January due to the festive season.

LNFS has noted that 95 percent of the fire outbreaks are caused by candles, stating that candles are cheaper than Chinese lights so more people buy them instead of the Chinese lights. “We can’t stop people from buying candles, but we can teach them how to use them. We are not trying to put any entity out of business”, Mr.  Boi indicated.

He also narrated that as part of efforts in creating public awareness about the dangers associated with fire outbreak, LNFS has made it clear that extinguishing a fire before it gets off hand is vital, adding: “Some extinguishers include dry powder and mixed up foam with liquid co2”. Explaining further, Director Boi said foam with liquid co2 is important to use in gas fires than water. He noted that using extinguishers in place of water can be effective in putting fires out as water only causes the fire to spread faster.

Meanwhile, Director Boi has assured that the LNFS will continue to implement planned measures in battling fires, emphasizing:  “We have picture flyers and agents moving from school to school to teach people about their safety. We also have people in various counties creating awareness to ensure that fire outbreaks are contained or minimized”.
