The staff and employees of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) held their Second General Assembly January 11, 2013 in Monrovia which embraced the participation of county staff. The Assembly aimed at forging strategic plans and road map for the entity in the New Year. The Assembly is traditionally DEA’s method of sourcing strategic plans for growth and development.

Unlike the past this year’s Assembly focused on DEA’s dream and vision and the needed equation to practically ensure that the entity moves to another appreciable level in line with interested international partners. DEA Director Anthony Souh who made a special statement at the occasion reiterated his appeal to the staff and employees to work harder and honestly and prove themselves worthy not only in the eyes of the public but also to win the conviction of the international community, which he said is now interested in helping DEA get out of the slumber and become a stronger force to combat drug in the Liberian society.

Director souh further stressed that DEA is no more alone in the struggle now that there are interested partners who have shown their willingness to help DEA grow and develop. Souh told the employees that it was about time they graduate from the tendency of doing those things that have the tendency to dissuade interested partners. He said it was incumbent upon the institution to live to the expectation of the partners by being aggressive yet law abiding; by being sanitized and productive. He said in the wake of the proven preparedness of the partners to assist us grow, there was need that the employees do away with those ugly habits that have the tendency of tarnishing the good image of DEA and the country as a whole.

He termed drug law enforcement as one of the important national tasks that needs attention and support especially in the wake of the growing infiltration of drug in the society. He therefore challenged the employees to be more vigilant and make this year a year of victory over and above drug traffickers and their associates.

For his part DEA Deputy Director for Operations Albert Chelly said it was time that DEA become aggressive and non-compromising in the discharge of its work. Chelly said the international community would be encouraged to assist DEA only on the basis of how serious willing the officers are in fighting drug. Chelly said Liberia should be place first and foremost in the fight against drug. He told the gathering that Liberia “is our motherland and as such we have the obligation to defend it at all cost”.  “This is our motherland; we must provoke the passage of the drug law by our actions and willingness; we will create a mobile unit to visit all of the counties to create the awareness that DEA is prepared to fight drug; adding, “DEA is your hand.”

The county commanders told the assembly that they were faced with logistical problems, lack of office space and above all the lack a strong drug law to enhance their functions.
