Visiting Botswana’s Minister of Education, Skill Development and a Member of Parliament, Dr. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi says Africa has the potential to build itself countries on the continent hold together in solidarity.
Speaking recently at a farewell dinner held in honor of delegation at the Palm Spring Resort in Monrovia, following its three-day state visit to Liberia’s Ministry of Education, Dr. Venson-Moitoi made reference to a long time notion that anything that is built on the continent has to come from somewhere else before it becomes fruitful. “Reason for this notion is that Africans have allowed themselves to believe in that fallacy,” indicated.
“For that reason, we in Botswana have decided to reach out to help those of our brothers and sisters that need assistance even if not much financially, but in information as to their experience especially,” the Botswana Education Minister maintained.
The assistance will also help other nation especially Liberia to avoid the mistake they (Botswana citizens) made because they believe it will be a contribution to the overall development of a country like Liberia coming out of conflict and as well reinvent to restructure and rebuild the country.
“For us we are using domestic funding to help other African countries despite the economic recession and which we cannot exactly afford, but we know that the survival of African countries is interdependent in the long run; where everybody is going to need somebody in the future and nobody ever knows unless who are those friends are ever going to be.” Dr. Venson- Moitoi noted.
For her part, Liberia’s Minister of Education, Etmonia David Tarpeh, noted that the Botswana Minister’s visit came as a result of the recent visit of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to that country, where the two Heads of state signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of collaboration which was followed by her visit along with a team of technicians to see the areas of collaboration as it relates to the educational sector of the country.
The Minister of the Republic of Botswana at the head of a high power delegation arrived in the country Monday, January 7, 2013, as guest of the Minister of Education, EtmoniaTarpeh.
While in the country, Dr. Venson-Moitoi met with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Houses of Senate and Representatives Committees on Education, government ministries and agency to discuss student exchange program and scholarship in the area of science.
The delegation also visited the Fendell and Main campuses of the University of Liberia, Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute (KRTTI), William V. S. Tubman High School, Stella Maris Polytechnic and the D. Twe High School in New Kru Town Bushrod Island. |
